OCCA Weekly Webinars Series 16 continues with "BioEffective Surfaces for Transport" presented by Dr James Redfern of BEST Network. The webinar will take place via Zoom on Wednesday 7 May at 2:30pm.

Abstract:

The increasing risks posed by bacteria, fungi and viruses have highlighted the need for effective control of microorganisms. One approach is to change materials used in the construction of the built environment from inert, non-biologically active surfaces to those that impart an antimicrobial activity. Such materials may be innately antimicrobial, produced with a biocide embedded within, or there may be some coatings or treatments that provide antimicrobial properties onto the surface. During the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, mass transport services were noted for the potential spread of pathogens due to close contact and repeatedly touching surfaces. The newly-formed, EPSRC-funded network ‘BioEffective Surfaces for Transport’ (BEST) aims to bring together engineers, biocide and coating manufacturers, microbiologists, end-users, policy makers among other interested parties to consider interdisciplinary and cross-sector ways forward to enhance the built environment with antimicrobial materials and coatings.

Speaker Profile - Dr James Redfern - MMU Lecturer Micro Biology, BEST Network

James Redfern is a Reader in Microbiology at Manchester Met University. His research involves the control of microorganisms in different/realistic environments using antibiofilm and antimicrobial technologies and includes work on method development, standardisation, and regulatory science amongst other interests.
